Mrs. Trewella Completes Her Final year
By Olivia DeCesare
Teacher and Faculty member Susan Trewella is retiring after a long successful career at Cardinal Mooney High School. After decades of dedicated service, Trewella has announced her retirement.
At the beginning of her career, Trewella gravitated to Mooney from her previous experience with the school: attending. She notes the tradition and spirituality of the school to be the driving factor in her employment decision.

Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for Me. Matthew 25:31-40. Trewella notes this gospel teaching as the lesson she wishes to pass down to every student. |
While Trewella embraces Mooney's longstanding tradition, she has brought her unique perspectives and characteristics to the school. Seasoned English teacher Mark Rinehart takes great pride in the role Trewella has played.
“Mrs. Trewella’s leadership academically and spiritually has been amazing, unprecedented and hypnotic,” Rinehart said. |
Fellow religion teacher Dr. Richard Mattiussi has noted Trewella’s added influence on Cardinal Mooney, especially on the students.
Mattiussi said, “Mrs. Trewella is the Dorothy Day of Cardinal Mooney High School. She has reached out to so many people over the decades, and the kids feel very comfortable going to her for moral support.”

It seems the students agree. Sophomore Michael “Mikey” Carfolo is grateful to have had Trewella in class.
“Mrs. Trewella is incredibly caring; she treats all of her students like family,” Carfolo said. “She cares about their success in her class and in their future.” |
She’s very proud of her Irish heritage, but she really wants to become an Italian. She's trying to figure out if St. Patrick was an Italian. Dr. Mattiussi on Trewella |
Seniors Millie Heschmeyer and Savanna VanSuch agree. Both noted that Trewella has a unique perspective on how to teach, giving a hands-on approach to religion rather than textbooks.
Heschmeyer said, “she has changed the way I view religion because she taught us how to go out and put God’s teachings into action.”
VanSuch explained that Trewella's emphasis on service stands out most.
"She wants us to practice the teachings of Christ, not just read about them,” VanSuch said.
Trewella has certainly achieved her goal of instilling the teachings of Christ into her students. She has taken a remarkable approach to the core values of Cardinal Mooney to teach, but has also allowed the community of Cardinal Mooney to teach her.
“Cardinal Mooney has enabled me to answer God’s call to teach,” Trewella said. “I have met thousands of wonderful students, families, faculty and staff over the years, who have been rich in my life, and helped me to grow as an educator.”
Cardinal Mooney is blessed to have Trewella as a teacher. Her approach to teaching has made her not only a distinct educator, but also a Christ-like role model.
Rinehart said, “What makes her unique is that she's empathetic and cares about everybody, and while a lot of other teachers do too, she also sees the good in everybody, even you.”
