This year, the Cardinal Mooney band and piano club will be performing a swing-like Christmas concert before the winter break. On Dec. 15, 2021, join them for a Christmas special at 7pm; refreshments will be included. They plan to make it a night to remember and a nice farewell until the new year.
Many of the band and piano members are ecstatic to show the supporters of Cardinal Mooney what they have to offer. It will be another step to promote the music program, as well as to give families a relaxing night.
The preparation for this year's concert has been steady. However, getting the members together has presented a challenge. Due to scheduling conflicts, not many of the band members were able to enroll in the class; therefore, they have been meeting up during flex time and after school for rehearsals. Concert director and band teacher Matthew Ohlin gave an insider’s perspective on the preparation.

Due to scheduling conflicts, not many of the band members were able to enroll in the class; therefore, they have been meeting up during flex time and after school for rehearsals. Concert director and band teacher Matthew Ohlin gave an insider’s perspective on the preparation.
“It was originally a combined band, choir, and piano concert, but also due to the current scheduling and use of time for the school and curriculum, the choir was unable to begin a class,” Ohlin said. “Students also did not sign up simply because they were unaware.”
The challenge of getting freshmen into the band is another factor Ohlin mentioned. Hopefully the concert will inspire those underclassmen who are interested in music to join either band, choir, or piano. Ohlin has high expectations as better results are the outcome of each rehearsal. |

Last year, the band originally planned for a Christmas concert before winter break or a holiday concert after the break. Unfortunately, due to COVID this plan was not fulfilled. Now in 2021, there is more of a chance to kick off holiday celebrations featuring classic Christmas songs with a twist.
Beyond this scheduled performance, future shows are also in the planning process. Ohlin is hoping to put together a spring show as well, featuring the band, piano club, and choir.
Despite all the difficulties, twists, and turns, the band and piano club has gotten through the tough preparation and are ready to perform for the school's supporters.
Ohlin said, “The finished product of this concert will show the dedication within our students.”
