Curtains open, stage lights turn on, and the performers are ready for the show. This year, the Cardinal Mooney spring production is going to be a little different.
Instead of investing in the rights to a show, students selected songs from musicals that make them happy and have helped them throughout this difficult time. The musical revue is aptly named Family! to signify the everlasting bonds developed by Mooney students. The cast is singing songs including “We’re All In This Together” from High School Musical and “The Greatest Show” from The Greatest Showman. |
The production is being directed by math teacher Tina Hughes and music teacher Matt Ohlin, along with guidance counselor Holly Marshall.
“There is so much talent in this cast. I am excited to see how everything comes together,” Hughes said.
Ohlin contributes his talent to help with the choral side of the show. He enjoys helping students express and improve their love for music.
“Usually each year I do help out the director with music,” Ohlin said. “It's becoming a regular thing for me.”
While being involved with the show is becoming a regular occurrence for Ohlin, there are other members of the Mooney family new to the stage.
With different grade levels participating, there are new students in the cast along with previous performers. The lineup includes soloists and duets, as well as group numbers.
Senior Aj Pecchia, a student athlete, is participating in his first show. In football, Pecchia said he was told to go out there and do what he has to do; this advice also helps him go out on stage and have fun.
Pecchia said, “I am excited. I just want to dance in front of everyone because it is going to be funny, yet good.”
Senior Natalie Kovacs has been performing her entire life. However, this show is different for her because she is able to finally perform onstage in front of an audience during the pandemic. Kovacs would normally perform in about five shows a year, so she is very grateful that Mooney is giving her the opportunity to perform one last time before she will go off to college.
“I am extremely excited about the upcoming show,” Kovacs said. It is coming together very nicely and everyone is participating so well. This makes the experience so much fun! Thank you to everyone who has made this possible.”
During rehearsals, the performers are not the only students preparing; much work must be done backstage. Juniors Jenna Hughes and Alyssa Rapp do an abundance for the show.
Hughes and Rapp run the music through the CD player, turn on and off mics for the performers, communicate backstage and help control the stage lights. Without them, the show would not be possible.
Because of COVID, tickets will be pre-sold, and there will be a limit on the number of guests. During the show, masks will be worn and social distancing will be enforced.
The production will take place Friday, April 16, 2021 and Saturday, April 17, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. There will be an additional performance on Sunday, April 18, 2021 at 5 p.m.
