Colossians 3:1-2 “SInce, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your hearts on things above, not on earthly things.”
As teenagers, we tend to stick to the earthly objects that make us seem “normal” or help us “fit in” with our peers. We do not see that God created each and every one of us in a unique and special way that we should love with our whole hearts. And we shouldn’t just love ourselves for that, we should love one another in the same way.
At times, it seems as though we grow attached to the earthly things that make us feel loved. For example, the new shoes we got for Christmas or the brand new iPhone for our birthday. These objects will mean nothing once we are at the gates of Heaven waiting for our invitation inside.
Our materialistic view on life interferes with our relationship with God and Christ. Though they are a part of our everyday lives, we need to learn how to separate them from the feeling of self-worth and self-love. God loves us for exactly who we are--not who we try to be by using earthly things to get the approval of others.
As the verse proclaims, “set your hearts on things above.” As the annual holiday of love approaches, remember to set your hearts on the love of Christ from above.
The season of Lent is approaching at a rapid pace. Beginning on Feb. 17, Ash Wednesday, fellow Christians will embark on the 40 day journey leading up to Easter on April 4. The day kicks off the season of fasting and prayer.
The ashes we receive and wear on this day symbolize the dust from which God made us. Genesis 3:19 “For dust you are and to dust you will return.”
As teens, we may forget the reason why we celebrate this day and the great meaning behind it in our faith. The ashes serve as a symbol of penance and help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice.
As we approach the Lenten season, we begin to remember the great sacrifice Christ made to save us from our earthly sins. In order to do this, we need to remain faithful to our Lord and proclaim his good news to all the world.
