Bass drums, cymbals, flutes, Oh my!
As the new school year begins, the fall sports season is springing into motion. The football team is training hard, the cheerleaders are cheering away, and the band members are beating their drums. Everything seems to be coming together for the season — except the band is in need of additional members. The band livens up the pep rallies and provides encouragement for the football players on the field. Being in the band allows students to make memories that last a lifetime. Senior Leonda Whatley is a flute player and a four year band member. Whatley said, “Some of my best memories are from playing at the rallies and games for the band; there's no better feeling than it. Especially all the fun moments that happen inside the band room.” Throughout the years, the number of members in the band has been growing. In 2016, the band was at a low number of nine. Now, 22 students have signed up; however, only five members have the class. Band teacher Matthew Ohlin said, “The scheduling conflict is a major issue holding the band back from our goal.” Senior Michael DiVencenzo also discussed the obstacles the band has faced. DiVencenzo plays the tenor and leads the percussion section. “I have been in band for three years, and every year has been amazing,” DiVencenzo said. “The band makes me feel like I am a part of a family and like I belong. The only thing holding us back is lack of members. We need more people to join so we can be the best we can be.” |

As an experienced band director, Ohlin has the knowledge needed to guide the band and to enhance each individual’s performance.
Ohlin said, “My experience teaching band has been challenging, but the kids are more than open to growing the program and working together to make that happen, which has definitely been a fulfilling experience.”
The only thing stopping the band from being the best they can be is the lack of students involved. Have you ever wanted to play an instrument? The band has plenty. From snares, to clarinets, to saxophones, and trumpets — the band has the perfect instrument for you. So what are you waiting for? Join the band today!
