Cardinal Mooney has gained a new Chaplain this school year, and the entire school is excited to welcome him. Father Matthew Humerickhouse has been extremely well received. Humerickhouse is excited to teach the Mooney family his favorite lesson: critical thinking. “the most important lesson anyone can learn is the ability to think critically,” Humerickhouse said. “So much of what is taught in school is simply an overview of a subject matter and there is always more to learn and dive deeper into when it comes to any topic.” |
Humerickhouse is proud to say his goal at Cardinal Mooney is bringing the family closer to Christ. Religion teachers Dr. Richard Mattiussi and Natalie Wardle both seem to agree that this is exactly what he is doing by having mass each week.
“The grace of weekly Mass being available will help us grow closer to Jesus Christ,” Mattiussi said.
In a similar vein, Wardle said, “Celebrating Mass each week allows students to be nourished and strengthened by God Himself through the Scriptures and through receiving the immeasurable gift of His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity in the Eucharist.”

Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. -Romans 15:7 |
Thankfully, Humerickhouse has been more than welcomed by the school. He happily has shared that students and staff have begun to recognize and greet him in the halls. The chaplain has also noted the religious climate being healthy for our school.
Humerickhouse said, “ I've noticed that maybe half of the students are not Catholic, which is fine because among the classrooms I have visited I have been asked great questions from inquisitive minds that genuinely want to learn more about the faith.”
Mattiussi, calling Humerickhouse “The Gentle Giant,” encourages more people to join him in the weekly masses to hopefully learn more about the faith, and grow closer to it. He also commends Humerickhouse for being engaging with students and classes as he visits. Wardle agrees with this sentiment.
“I believe Father Matt has integrated really well into the theology department at Cardinal Mooney. Anyone who has met and interacted with Fr. Matt knows he is a faithful man,” Wardle said.
