Cardinals Open their Hearts to give during Christmas Season
by Olivia DeCesare
The season of Christmas is upon us, and the Cardinals are giving back to the community. The Bible tells us the true meaning of Christmas is giving.
Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.
Deuteronomy 15:10
The Mooney Family is hosting a Christmas Food Drive in order to help feed the surrounding community of Youngstown during the Christmas season. The goal is to allow everyone to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with full plates and full hearts.
One of the strongest acts of giving within the season has been the #iGiveCatholic donation drive organized by alumni coordinator Sue Brandenstein. The goal of #iGiveCatholic was to raise $10,000 for financial assistance to Mooney students. In total, $14,900 was raised. The money was raised through several different efforts. The families of Cardinal Mooney were sent letters, and the fundraiser was advertised across Mooney’s social media, along with the weekly bulletin. |
Cardinal Mooney Students perform a jingle for #iGiveCatholic. Brandenstein said this was "to stir up excitement." |
Brandenstein said, “This year students collected change before and after school in the parking lot as well. We had a teacher incentive too, $100 for 100% participation, and we got it.”
The generosity of the Mooney Family is strong, and especially at this time of year, helps many people across the community. The Christmas food drive is still on-going and is organized by Religion teacher Sue Trewella.
Christ asks us to give continuously, and during the season of giving, that is exactly what the Mooney family does.
