The new nurse is here
Need a band-aid? She has them. Need an ice pack for a sore arm? She is prepared. Need a person in which you can confide? She is waiting for the tea. Everyone give a round of applause for Cardinal Mooney’s very own, Joyce Brown. Brown is one of the Mooney family’s newest additions. She has taken the role of school nurse by storm and loves being at Mooney with everyone’s smiling faces. Brown has been a nurse for 11 years. She first began caring for others at a young age when helping her aunts and other elderly family members. “At first, I liked working with the elderly, to keep them at home because I was taking care of my aunts,” she said. Nurse Brown attended Lawrence County Technical and Career Center in New Castle, Pennsylvania. After she completed her courses, she worked several other nursing positions including being a nurse aid and working in nursing homes. Brown then decided to switch over to working with teenagers. Coming from a large family, she felt that being with her nieces and nephews helped prepare and guide her to the path of becoming a school nurse. “I want to be someone that they look up to and to motivate and encourage them. A lot of times it's difficult for students to be at school, and if they have that one person that they can come to and talk to sometimes, it helps them through the day,” Brown said. During this time, it might be hard for teens to have access to a person that they can confide in and rely on every day. Students in today’s world have experienced a great deal of stress and turmoil, so it is comforting to know that Brown is willing to be that outlet for Mooney’s student body. "It's not easy to be in school," she said. "At this age, you think you’re alone. You just need that one person that's true, that's going to be true to you and be encouragement to you.” GOT BLOOD? According to redcrossblood.org, someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds. The website enourages volunteers to support blood donations and to deliver critical services to their community. |
