Speech and debate has been a prominent part of Cardinal Mooney since the school opened its doors in 1956. Over the years, with many awards, many coaches, and numerous different students, the team has always been successful. This year's team did not disappoint. The team sent eight students to the state tournament that was held from March 4 and 5 at Wooster High School. This year, our debate team won its second-consecutive district championship, and all four of its members made it to state. Seniors Ed Driscoll and Sarah Owens both beat competitor after competitor, with Driscoll making it into the quarter- finals, and Owens getting in the top 10. Senior Olivia DeCesare and junior Sophia Sdregas also qualified for the tournament, and picked up key victories that gave the team important points. |
“I was very excited for the team to go to state! Everyone has been practicing weekly for the entire year, and the team really pours their hearts into this activity,” DeCesare, the team’s president, said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the team members, and Mooney came home with well deserved plaques.”
Millie Heschmeyer, Mitchell Bogan, Gun “Sherlock” Jung, and Aliya Merriwether made sure the speech side did its part for the team. Heschmeyer made her way to victory in Dramatic Interpretation with third place at the state final tournament and qualified to go to nationals. Bogan had his third appearance at the state level with placing at the middle of the pack in United States Extemp, respectively. Since last year’s tournament was virtual, sophomore Merriwether and junior Jung had their first in-person appearance at state and did very well in United States Extemporaneous and Declamation.
“I was very excited for this tournament and blessed to represent Cardinal Mooney,” Merriwether said.
Vince Taddei, the team’s head coach, shared his sentiments regarding the season.

“I am very proud of each and every member of our team,” Taddei said. “Being a part of the speech and debate team at Cardinal Mooney is a great commitment. Not only do our students work hard to compete, but they also have the added responsibility of carrying on our great tradition.” Earlier in February, the Speech and Debate team competed at the national qualifying tournament. Driscoll won in Lincoln Douglas Debate, becoming the district champion. DeCesare came second behind Driscoll. Heschmeyer placed third in Dramatic Interpretation. All three senior team members will make a final appearance, qualifying for the national tournament. The speech and debate team would like to thank the Mooney Family and all who supported them throughout the season. |
