This year's girls golf team merged with the boys team; this means that instead of playing from the front tees, the golfers would play from the back tees in matches. Being moved back gave the golf team the advantage for sectionals, being that they would be going back to the front tees. On Monday, Sept. 27, 2021, the girls went to sectionals at Pine Lakes to play for an individual spot. Senior Alyssa Rapp finished with an 89, missing districts by two, and sophomore Laura Baldado ended with a 112. This outcome came as a surprise for everyone, including Coach Mary Terressa. Terressa said, “After having Alyssa Rapp compete 3 consecutive years at the state tournament, it was naturally our expectation that she would move on to districts.” |
Though disappointed with the outcome, Rapp expressed positivity and made it clear that this outcome will not stop her, or her teammate Baldado, in the years to come.
“I was upset because this was my last year golfing for high school, but college is the next chapter, and that's what I’m looking forward to,” Rapp said.
On Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021, the boys went to sectionals as a team.
Coach Edward Baldado shared his pride in the team and said, “These guys have learned how to play as a team and that’s what’s most important.”
Senior and team captain Jack Pepperney finished with a 99, junior Tim Reardon with an 87, barely missing an individual shot at districts, junior Joe Zeno with a 119, and sophomore Rocco Turner with a 74. The team did not make it to districts; however, Rocco Turner, a medalist, came in first individually in sectionals and finished out districts with a 77. Unfortunately, this was not enough to advance to state.
Pepperney commented on the team’s performance and said, “We did not perform how we wanted to, but we got through.”
Despite the outcome, the team is proud to be playing for Mooney golf and is looking forward to next year for another shot at state.
“The squad kept rolling,” Pepperney said.
