Office Patties Part Waysby Olivia DeCesarePatty Hughes retires after 33 years of service to Cardinal Mooney High School.
The office secretaries have been known as “The Patties” for over 20 years; however, this year marks the end of this nickname, as Patty Hughes approaches retirement. Her partner in crime, Patty Kalasky, might miss her the most. “She’s not allowed to retire,” Kalasky said. “We think too much alike, we finish each other’s thoughts, and we can find each other’s work when the other is not here.” |
Kalasky and Hughes have worked together for over two decades and are a synchronized duo. They have become efficient at all their work, especially letting in “frequent flyers,” or late students, like junior Millie Heschmeyer.
Heschmeyer said, “I’m thankful for all the tardy slips. I would have never made it to class without them.”
Despite the tardy kids, Hughes explained that her favorite part of working for Cardinal Mooney is the wonderful and outstanding students. Her connection with the Cardinals runs deep, as her entire family has graduated from Mooney.
“The Mooney Family to me means an extended family made up of friends, co-workers, alumni, teachers, administrators and coaches who care for each other and the traditions, values and religious beliefs that have always been a part of what makes Cardinal Mooney High School,” Hughes said.
This deep connection to Mooney is important for whatever secretary comes next. Kalasky joked about the bar for the new secretary.
“There’s no requirement that their name has to be Patty—it should be— but we’re letting it slide," Kalasky said. "However, their entire family must have graduated from Mooney for sure.”

For me, the best part of Mooney has been the many wonderful people and outstanding students I have met. -Mrs. Patty Hughes |
The entire school is sad to see such a kind-hearted staff member leave, especially one so close to our heart and our front door.
“I’m sad to see her retiring; however, I wish her luck on all her endeavors," Heschmeyer said. "She is always so nice." |
Hughes holds a special place in her heart for Cardinal Mooney, and she always will. She talked about her retirement optimistically, but explained that she will always carry a piece of Mooney with her.
“While I am looking forward to retiring, I will never fully part with Mooney,” Hughes said. “It’s been too much a part of my life. I, my husband, and four children graduated from Mooney. Monsignor Hughes became my uncle. My family says I live and breathe Mooney.”
As a parting statement, she had a message for all the “frequent flyers” like Heschmeyer.
Hughes said, “As for you late kids— try to be on time for the rest of the year, and the rest of your life, please!”
