EnglishEvery country around the world has a flag day, but none are as celebrated as Mexico’s. Senora Bassil’s Spanish III class investigated the meaning behind the colors and symbols that are on the current Mexican flag. The colors are green, white, and red; the symbol on the flag is an eagle on top of a cactus killing a snake. Let's look at the meaning behind the flag’s symbols. The green color represents independence and hope. Junior Allee Blohm looked more into the green color. Blohm said, “According to the originators, the green vertical bar along the left side of the flag represents the independence movement and the separation from Spain. It later became to represent hope.” The white color of the Mexican flag represents purity and unity. Junior Courtney Enright investigated the meaning of the color. Enright said, “The white of the flag is for the Catholicism and unity of Mexico. The creators wanted to acknowledge Mexico’s devotion to Catholicism. The white of the flag represents the purity of Mexico’s faith. Later it was changed to represent unity.” The red color of the Mexican flag represents blood. Senior, Asia Jones looked more into the red color. Jones said, “The color red was originally intended to represent unity with the people of the country. The meaning behind the colors of the Mexican flag has regained its significance. The color represents the blood for the national heros who have died fighting for Mexico’s independence.” The Eagle on the flag is represented by a Mexican myth. Junior Maria Fire looked more in depth into the myth. Fire said, “The coat of arms on the Mexican flag is an eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus devouring a rattlesnake. According to legend, the wandering Aztecs would know where to build their new city when they saw an eagle perched on a cactus. The image did appear to them on a tiny island in the middle of Lake Texcoco.” We can see Mexico’s flag has many symbols and meaning behind it. The whole country celebrates the holiday by parades, assemblies in schools, and parties at night. Keep up with mooney's dedication to catholicism |
