Coming off of a district championship last season, the boys basketball team has very high expectations for the 2021-2022 season. If it’s anything like last year, the team’s full court press will give opponents problems and help the team to achieve their goals.
Head coach Carey Palermo commented on his expectations for the season, particularly noting the leadership of the senior boys.
Head coach Carey Palermo commented on his expectations for the season, particularly noting the leadership of the senior boys.
“We have a great group of seniors,” Palermo said. “They work extremely hard and are together. They are all accepting of their roles, starring in them.”
Seniors Mick Hergenrother, Drew Pecchia, James Campbell, and Jack Pepperney all serve as captains of the team, accepting their roles as Palermo noted. The boys return seven letter winners, including three starters. One of those starters is Hergenrother, who is the point guard. Hergenrother identified the areas where improvement is most needed. “We’ll have to improve on team communication and defense,” Hergenrother said. Senior Jack Desmond elaborated on the goals that the young men have set out to achieve throughout the course of the season. “The goals for our season are having a winning record, winning the SVC, and beating Ursuline,” Desmond said. Junior Nolan Radinsky also shared his thoughts regarding his plan for the season. |
Radinsky said, “The goals for the season are helping varsity win districts and beyond. Something to improve on throughout the season is to become a closer team and family than before.”
One factor the boys need to consider is their future opponents, and they have several thoughts in reference to what team will be the most challenging to defeat. Radinsky said that the toughest opponent for the season is Chaney.
According to freshman Samuel Owens, there is a different opponent that the freshman team is preparing to face.
“Our toughest opponent of the season would be Boardman because they are a big school and have a great basketball team,” Owens said.
When the seniors were asked who their toughest games would be against, the boys said Canfield and Ursuline. These difficult games will prepare the boys varsity team for another deep tournament run.
