Students can unanimously agree snow days are the best days ever. They try to pack as much fun as possible in one day. The piles of snow make the cold feel warm in their hearts, especially because these days make teenagers recall childhood memories.
This year, schools have been dealing with numerous impacts of COVID-19, including the incorporation of remote learning. So, that raises the question: “Will we go remote on snow days?”
New York City's school system has officially canceled their snow days for the 2020-2021 term. The news came after deciding that utilizing remote learning was the best way for students to continue making progress.
New York’s decision makes sense, but what about the joy snow days bring to not only little kids but to teens — even adults! The year has taken a toll on mental health, so a snow day is definitely a cure.
Snow days are something kids never forget. As years go by and children grow up, things change, but the feeling of getting school called off will forever be the same.
It makes teens forget about life and just be a kid for the day. College is coming up for seniors, and this time can be very stressful. Senior Gia Diorio shared her feelings about having three snow days this year.
“When we have snow days, we have stress relief. We usually do not get that freedom when we are online,” Diorio said.
Just as students at Cardinal Mooney appreciate the day off, many faculty members feel the same. Religion teacher Susan Trewella commented about her excitement for snow days.
“I think snow days are a gift from God," she said. "When you wake up in the morning and the world is covered in a blanket of white, and you get that phone call or text to say: school is canceled for today. What greater gift could you receive? I remember when my children were small and we had a snow day, we would bundle up and go outside and play. And then we would come into the house and have hot chocolate with little teeny marshmallows.”
Trewella expressed that she cares for her students' well being and wants Mooney students to make special memories like she did.
