NEW ADMINISTRATION DISPLAYS OPTIMISM FOR MOONEY’S FUTUREBy Marissa Landers
Cardinal Mooney High School's leaders value love, faith, and family. The administration wants the students to succeed in life by understanding what is best for them as a whole: not just through education, but through their faith. The Mooney family welcomed a new administration for the 2020-2021 school year.
Thomas Maj, president of Cardinal Mooney, leads a strong, experienced staff that collect, analyze, and use data for student learning. He said, “If we aren't interested in it on our own, we have a problem. If you are leading anybody, you can collect data for anyone, but you have to help people understand the importance of what the data is telling you. You have to respect that data is important information, and you have to be able to respond to it.“ Maj brings strengths to his new position that assist him in linking with the community. He has been in education for 31 years now, working in five dioceses and running both Catholic and public schools. His experience has allowed him to view schools from a variety of perspectives. He has contributed to the finances of Cardinal Mooney. Maj said, “First and foremost, we are a non-profit organization, and you can contribute by managing resources that are given to you by being a good steward. My role as president is to raise awareness and funds for the school. While operations are the same school to school, it's the customs and traditions you have to learn, knowing what matters to the graduates of Mooney and who came before me." Maj chose Cardinal Mooney High School because they chose him. He values Catholic education. He said, “Catholic schools are most suited to making a difference in students' lives. Personally, I have been in Texas for four and a half years, and Mooney gave me an opportunity to come back to Ohio and be closer to family." New principal Dr. Mary Anne Beiting enjoys working with the faculty, family and students because relationships are at the heart of Catholic education. Beiting has worked at different schools throughout her career. |

She said, “Each school has its own personality, and that is one of the things that makes it fun. I had been at my previous school for a long time, and I have seen that Mooney is unique and has its own blessings. The Mooney community is supportive and is interested in the well-being of the students and having a good education for all and developing the faith.”
Since she has a wealth of experience and background knowledge, Beiting is able to develop a clear vision for Mooney's future.
Her vision of Cardinal Mooney is a “strong Catholic school that brings together traditions as well as innovation to help students be best prepared for the future, like how to learn and learn new things, and to be familiar with technology for good. It is a place where students' hearts are open to serve God and the communities that we are involved in to help God’s kingdom.”
New assistant principal Matthew Monter engages in many different responsibilities. Throughout the day, he helps out with academic issues and scheduling, he gets in touch with students who are struggling and he manages contact tracing and phone calls in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Monter said, “It is not traditionally what you sign up for, but as an assistant principal you have to be able to adapt to what's around us.”
Monter’s vision for his position is continuing to become more involved in everything in the life of the school and to learn more about programs and Mooney's operation.
He said that in the future he sees Mooney “continuing to grow and meeting the needs of the students in different ways. Like getting up and out when we are able to promote what we do, why our school is important in the area, connecting with alumni and raising the bar academically.”
Monter wants to provide students with the best opportunity to be successful when they leave Mooney and to prepare them for the next chapter by helping them academically, spiritually and athletically.
A new position, dean of students, has also been added to the administration, which is fulfilled by teacher Janet Cadman. She is finishing her administrative license through Cleveland State.
Cadman said, “It has been one of my dream jobs to be a dean of students. I knew that I wanted to move more into the administrative end for teaching, and I came upon the “dean of students” title. When this opened up it was the perfect job.”
Cadman is in charge of student attendance, student discipline, and she oversees student activities. Her position takes the burden off of the principal and vice principal. Cadman’s new position gives the students an opportunity to work with someone like herself and understand the importance of coming to school on time and following the rules. This year the new administration changed up some policies to help the students understand the rules and consequences that accompany them.
