The Beakon features Erik Vargo
Of over 230,000 works submitted to the Scholastic Art and Writing Program, only 2,000 received National Awards for 2021. Cardinal Mooney senior Erik Vargo is one of those 2,000. He received a Scholastic Art and Writing Silver Medal Award and a Gold Key for his photograph, “Heartbreak on the Hardwood.” "I was pretty shocked at first since I didn't think I was going to get past the regionals," Vargo said. "so getting recognized on a national level is really amazing." Vargo was given a spot in the Solomon Gallery display at YSU back in January; his photograph was sent to New York City, where high-ranking leaders in the art field will look upon it. Photography teacher Maureen Kandray said that she is thrilled for Vargo. "He will receive accolades, not only locally, but nationally as well," she said. Thanks to Vargo’s dedication to his craft, “Heartbreak on the Hardwood” will be in Scholastic’s 2021 National Medalist Virtual Gallery in June. "He has a natural ability to do this. He was born with it," Kandray said. |
