It’s volleyball season and playoffs are right around the corner. The Cardinal Mooney girls volleyball team is preparing to take the court and bring home some hardware. The week of Oct. 10-16 holds a lot of excitement for the team, as they have been preparing for this point in the season since the beginning of the summer.
As assistant coach Toni Chahine said, “This is definitely a week that can help us prepare for playoffs. With four competitive games ahead of us, we will be getting ourselves in the playoff mentality.” Chahine also reports that if the team wins their game on Tuesday, Oct. 12, they will be Steel Valley Conference (SVC) Champions again, following the conference success of last year. The team's other goals include taking their chance at a district title. Senior Angelina Rotunno followed up on the idea of a district title, adding, “I am looking forward to competing hard and playing every game like it’s my last. I want to go far with the post-season games.” While the team has three accomplished senior athletes, including Rotunno, there are a lot of promising young players that are expected to make an impact on the team now, and in years to come. |
“There are about five sophomores on varsity who have had to fill roles and gain lots of experience in such a short time to rise to the competition of our schedule,” Chahine said.
Rotunno agrees and adds credit to junior Maria Fire, a middle hitter on the varsity squad. Fire is expecting the playoffs to be competitive due to the level of teams they’ve faced in the regular season.
“Lots of people didn’t think we could win a district championship. Our goal this year is to prove them wrong,” Fire said.
Fire also explained how freshman Sammy Rotunno is always cheering the team up and bringing smiles to their faces. Fire expects this type of encouragement to be a big factor in the playoff hype — the kind of hype the Cardinals need to win! Keep up with the volleyball team |
