From Cardinal to Penguin
The Youngstown State University football team is ready to play. Due to the pandemic, the football season was delayed, but it did not stop the athletes from training. The Penguins played their spring home opener on Saturday, Feb. 27 when they played host to UNI.
Cardinal Mooney alumni Vinny Gentile is a main contributor to the YSU football program. He graduated from Mooney in 2018 and is now majoring in biology. He started playing on the football team in June of 2018 and is a defensive line. Gentile is passionate and ready to work this season. “We’ve been practicing and going against each other for way too long, and now we finally get to line up against a real opponent,” he said. |
However, the team faced heavier consequences with the virus. It was difficult at times for the team to adapt to the new regulations and procedures.
Gentile said, “Now that we all pretty much know the rules and how to correctly follow them, it’s hard dealing with positive tests and quarantines of teammates and coaches.”
As the season continues, the team will strive to achieve many accomplishments, including winning a national championship.
The Mooney Family will always support alumni, including our penguin: Vinny Gentile. Good luck and have a great season!
