This fall, Cardinal Mooney’s cross country team has run back into action. Not only have they had personal achievements, but also team accomplishments. So far, they have experienced a great season, with the team placing fourth out of 30 teams in the suburban league. Junior Sylvia Tsarnas shared some of her personal accomplishments. Tsarnas came first in Columbiana and second in both Niles and East Palestine. “Throughout my career I have received awards in a majority of races,” Tsarnas said. “My sophomore year, I attended the regional championships in cross country and made it to regionals in the 800m and 4x400m relay in track. I also broke Mooney’s 800m girls record and set some relay records in track as well.” With her success, Tsarnas offers advice to other runners. Tsarnas said, “The key to being a successful runner is a great mindset, because it is 90% mental and 10% body. Along with that, you have to train a lot in the off season, practice how you race, and work very hard. Setting goals and having the mindset of a great athlete will shape you into a great athlete.” |
The rest of the team has managed to place within the top 25 at every meet. Coach Joel Hughes expressed how proud he is of the team this season. “The team has tackled many hard courses and preserved through the best to accomplish many team and individual goals,” Hughes said. |
